The skeletal system is a complex network of framework, consisting of bones and other connective tissues, supporting and protecting the external and internal organs and tissues of the body. The skeletal system contains 206 bones in total, 32 teeth, and numerous tissues throughout holding them together, or connecting them to muscles. As an infant, about 300 "bones" are present, but because of ossification, it becomes 206 bones by adulthood. The skeletal system is in charge of 6 major tasks: the production of blood cells, support, movement, protection, the storage of ions, and endocrine regulation. It is one of the most vital systems that we have in our bodies, and without it, we wouldn't be able to function at all. |
